“Live” With Purpose

I’m only human I’m just a man
Help me to believe in what I could be and all that I am
Show me the stairway that I have to climb
Lord for my sake teach me to take one day at a time
One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do everyday what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time
Do you remember when you walked among men
Well Jesus you know if you’re looking below it’s worse now than then
Cheating and stealing, violence and crime
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time
One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do everyday what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
Yes just for my sake teach me to take one day at a time

“One Day at a Time”: written by: William Nelson

So many young people today seem to be saying “they have no purpose” or “what is my purpose here?“.   Purpose in the dictionary says, “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists”.  We all want to be of some purpose in our lives.

Well, we all have purpose.  When I was a teenager, I used to think this way.  I was going through a tough time and I just thought, “Why am I here, What good am I, What is my purpose“.  I just kept tap dancing for everyone else.

But whoa!  That’s the key to the whole thing  —  my talents (not as a tap dancer) were just what I  was doing already.  I lived with two ageing grandparents and a very sick daddy.  My purpose at that time, was to be there for them.

I’d sleep with one eye and one ear open at night to listen for any distress my daddy might be in.

That was a purpose.

I would help my grandma with shopping, housework and cooking.

That was a purpose.

When my daddy passed away, I was a little angry with God and asked Him why didn’t He take me too.  But now I know, it was time for my daddy to be healed and at rest.  God, had something else for me to do and guess what!…now I have a purpose to share God’s love and joy with you.  The purpose of this was to give daddy healing and peace and me too.

I was raised in a God-fearing home.  I knew about the goodness of God in my life.  Some people just don’t have that and so there is nothing to grasp onto, to get what life is all about, when the tough times come around.  Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”  Proverbs 22:6

Even those who have been raised with God sometimes have ‘slip away moments’ from His truths, but more times than not, they won’t stray too far and these truths to live by come back and strengthen us and give us comfort when the world is raging by in its torrents of unrest.  Not a day goes by that we’re not in need of God’s grace and peace.  Everyday we need His Spirit to fill us again, to strengthen us for what’s ahead.  Every day we need a fresh word that He speaks to our hearts, to help keep our focus on what’s most important.

We have stages of life – from childhood through adulthood.  Each one giving us a purpose for something – which in time, with each new experience, will show us a purpose.  Take what we know and do!  God gives us purpose in doing!  Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”   Philippians 4:6, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

A good adage to keep in mind is:

Begin your day with God ——–End your day with God

If you live in these parameters you will find your purpose.  God will show you your gifts.  The gifts He has given you.  The gifts which will inevitably direct you to your purpose.  The purpose God wants for you — the plan He has for you to prosper.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11

Our God is our creator and He is love.  He made us.  He knows us.  He has a road-map for our lives.  The more we learn of Him, the more we come to understand who we are and why we’re here.

He also made us in His image and from the beginning He gave us purpose, to take care of everything He’s made.  Genesis 1:26-27, “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”  Ephesians 5:1, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.”  Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

You are only one person, but you are unique and precious to God.  Spending time each day with Him will relinquish the restlessness of what your purpose is and gives you a better outlook.  One day at a time.  Everyone is too busy nowadays, but that’s just when we need to make time for our Lord who keeps us sane.  We must not neglect Him.  “This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.”  Psalm 119:50

If you do it right, people will look at you and ask “What is it that makes you different?”

Each day with God is one day brighter, stronger, purposeful and closer to being with Him one day forever.  All it takes is One Day At A Time.  Don’t doubt that God has a specific purpose for your life.  Just be patient and prayerful as you see it unfold.

If you don’t know Jesus and to get started with that journey of a day at a time with Him, start with this simple little prayer.  Ask Him into your heart, He’ll give you that purpose you’ve been looking for, and so much more.

May God Richly Bless You Today

Wherever we go God is immediately accessible to us.  We don’t need a cell phone.  We never need to feel stranded in a crisis.

Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.
Every day with Jesus I love Him more and more.
Jesus saves and keeps me and He’s the One I’m waiting for.
Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.

                                                                                                                                    (Robert Claire Loveless)

One day you’re going to wake up and say God gave me a gift,

“What did I do with it?”
