“Soul”…Your Soul

When You found me
I was so blind
My sin was before me
I was swallowed by pride
But out of the darkness You brought me to Your light
You showed me new mercy and opened up my eyes
From the day You saved my soul
‘Til the very moment that I come home
I’ll sing, I’ll dance
my heart will overflow
from the day You saved my soul
Where brilliant light is all around
and endless joy is the only sound
Oh, rest my heart forever now
Oh, in Your arms I’ll always be found
From the day You saved my soul

A Soul…Your SoulYour Very Being

“Soul Food”  is a variety of cuisine originating in the southern states (in the US) and the term “soul food” came to be more prominent in the 1960’s.  Such dishes as fried chicken with macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and fried okra, peas, rice and sweet potatoes.  Some just call them “comfort food”.  Things we eat when we are feeling low, to try and make us feel good, with calories.

Now I know of another “soul food” which has no calories and can make you feel good for much longer, but  I will get to that a bit later.

Then we have “Soul Music”, which came  in the late 1950s and early 1960s, combining  African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz.  Some tunes can be loud and in your face, some are melancholy to bring your mood to a sadness, while others are soothing to the soul.

As humans we have souls.  Computers don’t have souls.  Robots don’t have souls.  But the human dimension is fast disappearing from much of our ways of how we do things.  We are slowly being identified by numbers: a number for social insurance, credit cards, bank accounts and driver’s licenses, but where does that leave us as humans, truly human, with a spirit, the likeness of God and our souls.  More and more we are being replaced by digital information, which in my opinion makes way for receiving the worst number to our identity “666”.  But where does that leave our souls?  Accepting that final number is selling your soul to the devil!

In God’s eyes we are still the individuals He made us to be, loving and caring of others, without hate and malice.  He made us so that we could  “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”  Deuteronomy 6:5   Your heart being your intellect, sense and will.  Your soul is a synonym for the heart – but it’s the true essence of you as a person.  Your strength means give it all that you have.

As the sun is a centrepiece of creation, God’s Word must be the centrepiece of a believer’s life.  This is the soul food I referred to earlier.  You know that old saying “you are what you eat.”  Well, if that is true for our bodies, it’s even truer for our souls.  The spiritual nourishment we give our hearts and minds becomes the building material that determines who we are and how we behave.  We as humans need “soul restoration” because of spiritual carelessness, difficult circumstances, secret sin and the world’s influences.  God wants an intimate involvement with His people, wanting to lead them – not just point the way.  “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”  Psalm 23:3.

Why is our soul so important?  “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”  Mark 3:36   Many people have accumulated homes, clothes, vehicles and lots of money…which may or may-not be all that it’s cracked up to be.  Because, sooner or later it will all disappear in the flash of a moment.  Riches can corrupt, gold and silver can corrode and your garments can get moth-eaten. James 5-3  And what’s more, have you ever seen a hearse towing a U-haul?  Just saying you won’t be taking it with you.  Jesus tells us, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  Matthew 6:19-21   God can provide you with more than this world has to offer, through Jesus Christ.  Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  John 14:6

Because when you walk with the Lord your soul prospers.  When you die your body goes nowhere,  Your worldly goods go nowhere, but your soul goes somewhere, preferably to heaven.  By way of our soul, we will continue to be who we are even in heaven but with new bodies and who doesn’t want a complete make-over!

So if you want that complete make-over you can start now.  Get your heart and soul right, with Jesus in it today.  Fill up on God’s Word daily.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”  Proverbs 3:5-6.  “Therefore lay aside all filthiness {this is like ear wax, it prevents us from hearing and receiving God’s Word} and overflow of wickedness {the world’s pull on us}, and receive with meekness the implanted word {welcoming God’s Word into our hearts like a love letter}, which is able to save your souls.”  James 1:21 {italics are only for interpretation}.  Ask yourself these questions: Do you want to be made whole?  Do you want to be forgiven and delivered from sin?  Do you want to be saved for eternity?  If you answered “yes” to any of these, Jesus is waiting to come into your heart and mend your soul.

So, when the trumpet of the Lord sounds, will you be among those who will be caught up in the air with Jesus at the Rapture?

Don’t be left behind.   Ensure your soul will be ever present with the Lord.  (And eventually that new body will join that soul.  How exhilarating that will be!)

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
